DES Information for Providers

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has launched a health education campaign designed to raise awareness about the continued health risks of diethylstilbestrol (DES). The CDC’s DES Update is a comprehensive national education program for consumers and health care providers.

An estimated 5 – 10 million people were exposed to DES in the United States between 1938-1971 including women who were prescribed DES while pregnant and the female and male children born of these pregnancies. Initially, DES was thought to be a safe and effective way to prevent miscarriages or premature deliveries. However, later studies revealed that DES was ineffective in preventing pregnancy problems and that exposure to DES was associated with increased health risks. In 1971, the FDA issued a Drug Bulletin advising physicians to stop prescribing DES to pregnant women because it was linked to a rare vaginal cancer in female offspring.

CDC’s DES Update provides the first comprehensive set of information about DES for health care providers and patients, including findings from the most recent studies on the health effects of DES exposure. Resources and free materials for health care providers and consumers are included on the website.

National Health Service Corps Scholarship and Loan Repayment Programs

Nurse Practitioners are eligible for National Health Service Corps scholarship and loan repayment programs. In exchange for a scholarship or repayment of educational loans, a NP needs to work full time in a federally-designated Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) for at least two years.

For HPSA information, see http://chems.alaska.gov/HPSA_Status_Primary.htm or http://bhpr.hrsa.gov/shortage/. The employing site would need to complete a simple NHSC Recruitment and Retention Assistance Application, available at http://nhsc.bhpr.hrsa.gov/applications/ .

For more information about the NHSC programs, see http://nhsc.bhpr.hrsa.gov/get_started/. You may also contact Jean Findley at the State of Alaska Primary Care Office: Jean_Findley@health.state.ak.us  or 907-465-8652.
